Lester Young, the model for cool tenor saxophonists, played softer than Coleman Hawkins and was more subtle and abstract. Young himself was influenced the most by Rudy Wiedoeft (a nonjazz concert artist), Frankie Trumbauer, and Jimmy Dorsey. Oddly enough, all were white alto saxophone or C melody saxophone players instead of black tenor saxophone players. Young's playing naturally matched his personality--soft-spoken and understated.
